MISER PARCEL – Given in 1991 by Hugh and Judy Miser, 2.54 acres.
The Miser parcel is separated from the Rutz parcel by a 200- foot North-South power right of way. The parcel lies along South Road, near the big colonial home at # 199 that the Misers bought from the Cushmans in 1966. Home and land are near the crest of the hill overlooking Route 84 and in the distance the city of Hartford. To the west and north are a power line and a state highway garage and work area.
The land is wooded and slopes up to the rear of the house. The western portion is wetland, and a slow-moving stream runs west to east through the bottom of the property. The stream is spanned by a decrepit old brownstone bridge. There are thickets of bushes, brambles and vines. Some patches of fragmites are present. There are remains of barbed wire fences, farm outbuildings, springhouses, and a brick chimney.
The adjacent house has been extensively remodeled, but may incorporate parts of the 1735 Daniel North home. It passed from North to Woodruff ownership in 1832, then to the Lawrence family and the Holts. All were farmers of the difficult wet and sloping terrain. Mrs. Mary McGee Holt was born in Ireland, the daughter of Patrick McGee. Subsequent owners did not farm, and further remodeled the house.
