CONKLIN AND MAXIM PARCELS - Given in 1985 by Ann Conklin and Hiram Maxim. These parcels are contiguous, and are respectively 3.17 and 3.92 acres in size.
The combined properties form an elongate irregular rectangle which is bisected by a small brook. The land slopes gently down from Old Mountain Road between houselots and is bounded by another houselot at its downhill end. There are stone walls in poor repair, and far down the brook is a low dam and marshy pond. The land is stony, with scattered traprock on the surface and a few boulders. Narrow strips of marshy ground border the brook.
The second-growth hardwood forest is quite dense, with maples, black birch, ash, many beeches, old cedars and a few red oaks. There are a few big “wolf trees” – ancient maples grown full and round. These are evidence that the lots were formerly pastureland. There are fern, skunk cabbage and other wetland plant species. Invasives are present: multiflora rose, bittersweet, a few burning bush and honeysuckle. These are moderate in number, and more numerous on the upper parcel.
There has been evidence of deer, fox, raccoon, skunk, wild turkey and opossum. The woods are open and suitable for a pleasant not-too- strenuous walk.
This land was in former years part of extensive holdings on the west slope of Talcott Ridge used for agricultural [mostly grazing] purposes or as woodlots. Houses in the immediate area are recent, several dating to subdivision of land by Samuel Walters in 1968. Hiram Maxim bought from Walters; Anne Allen Conklin from Sherman Eddy in 1935.
